Hosting Features & Service Details

L A Bridge is a small but nimble company that has been in business since 1994. We are known for providing customized services that we'll adapt to customer needs. From high speed DSL access and Web hosting to custom CGI creation and secure ordering, we can support your unique use of the Internet. If you don't see what you're are looking for on our products page then feel free to ask. The following is a list of features to get you started in exploring what L A Bridge has to offer.

High capacity Network at the Internet's Nexus
Over 200 Megabits of transit plus multiple "peering" points with other Los Angeles ISPs. L A Bridge is located in the building with MAE-LA (where backbones intersect in Los Angeles). We are directly connected to the California University network system giving our customers entry to the exclusive Internet-2 infrastructure: a 10 Gigabit dark fiber uber network used by academia. Traceroute to www.Berkeley.edu from our "Network Utilities" page and notice the hops that include ge.cenic.net. Visit www.Cenic.org for more details on "Internet II".

Reliability
  • Nightly backups of all Web sites and e-mail
  • Primary and secondary mail servers plus multiple off-site "mail spools" ensure that you never miss a message
  • Direct gigabit Ethernet connection to multiple backbones eliminates phone company failures
  • Direct connection to Internet2
  • APC battery backup system provides you with access to our network even if the power grid is down

SPAM Rejection and Quarentine
Through our partnership with Postini incoming SPAM and viruses are quarantined. L A Bridge customers receive an e-mail from the Postini spam blocker explainging that a message has been quarantined along with a link that allows them to view the suspect message through a web-based interface. Read the Instructions and FAQ for more information. In our opinion, Postini is the Patriot Missle of spam blockers. It outperforms Spam Assassin and many other spam blocking mechanisms used by other ISPs because they utilize a 24 hour manned NOC to identify spam and virus threats. Postini is expensive to run. This may be why so many ISPs don't budget for this level of defense.

High Speed DSL Access in Southern California
Instant Connection - One Click And You're Online: DSL service from L A Bridge Internet eliminates the need to dial-up an access number for every connection to the Internet. Users are always one click away from the Net because DSL is a dedicated connection - no waiting, no busy signals. And DSL end-users can still use their phone while they are online. Now available in Southern California.

Server Co-location
Bring your servers to our facility. You get the benefit of a 100MBit direct ethernet connection to the backbone on our fully switched LAN. With co-location you don't have to pay the phone company for a dedicated T-1 circuit so your overall costs remain low. Starting at $199

Co-location customers enjoy:

  1. Direct connection to a cisco Catalyst 100BaseTX, Full Duplex, switch.
  2. Bandwidth usage statistics
  3. On-call firewall services in the event that your machine comes under attack.
  4. Tape backup assistance so you don't have to drive to the office to change tapes.

Domain Name Registration
Provides a unique name for your Web site and e-mail address. For example, if you had a group called "Acme Artists", you could have a Web site called www.AcmeArtists.com and you could have an e-mail address like Alan@AcmeArtists.com.

Web Hosting Service
All dial-up/DSL customers receive 6mb of Web hosting space on our servers. We offer Unix (default for free Web sites) and Macintosh Web servers. By using a Macintosh for Web hosting we can offer easy to use CGI access via NetForms & NetCloak along with top of the line Web server security (see next subject below). All users can receive log file statistics for their Web site.

Web Hosting Security
Q. Are some operating systems more secure to use as platforms for Web servers than others?
A.
The answer is yes, although the Unix and NT communities may not like to hear it. In general, the more powerful and flexible the operating system, the more open it is for attack through its Web (and other) servers.
Unix systems, with their large number of built-in servers, services, scripting languages, and interpreters, are particularly vulnerable to attack because there are simply so many portals of entry for hackers to exploit. Less capable systems, such as Macintoshes and special-purpose Web server boxes, are less easy to exploit. The safest Web site is a bare-bones Macintosh running a bare-bones Web server.
Security holes have been found in both Unix and Windows NT server systems, and new security holes are being found on a regular basis. On the whole Windows NT systems seem to be more vulnerable at the current time, partly the OS is relatively new and the big bugs haven't been shaken out, and partly because the NT file system and user account system are highly complex and difficult to configure correctly.
If you have configured your system correctly and are compulsive about applying your vendor's security patches promptly, a typical Unix system will be more secure than a typical NT system.
