Configuring Mac OS7.0 thru 7.5 Dial-up

This tutorial explains the steps you must take to set up your Macintosh for access to the Internet through L A Bridge. Each step is illustrated by screen graphics from a configured Macintosh so that installation will be simple.

Extensions and Control Panels You will need: ( See icons on right ---->> )

  • PPP Extension
  • MacTCP or Open Transport
  • Config PPP, Free PPP or PPP

Note: Fax software is a common cause of problems with dial-up internet connections because it uses the same serial port and modem. If possible, disable your fax program before you begin.

If you know what software you will be using for Internet connectivity please skip to the appropriate section:

Section 1a: Configuring Open Transport

Determine if you can run Open Transport by launching the Network Software Selector located in the Apple Extras Folder. If you do not have the Network Software Selector installed please skip to section 1b.

Select the radio button that says "Use Open Transport Networking" and restart your computer.

Once you have enabled Open Transport you need to configure the information in the TCP/IP control panel to look like this:

OT
Control Panels: TCP/IP (configure this window exactly as above)

Once you have completed this step you can move on to Section 2.

Section 1, b: Configuring MacTCP

This section does not apply to people using TCP/IP. If you just completed step 1A then go on to section 2.

If you are using MacTCP for internet connectivity make sure you have the PPP extension installed in the Extensions folder and MacTCP and ConfigPPP installed in the Control Panels folder. You must restart your Mac after installing these items for the first time.

Launch MacTCP, and select PPP:

Click More... and change the settings to look like this:

Begin by following these instructions.

  • Launch ConfigPPP from the Control Panels Folder
  • Select New... and type in LABridge.com
  • Click OK
  • Fill in the blanks to match the graphic below. (Port name should indicate the serial port that your modem is on.)

Click the Config... button and make it look exactly as below. Determine what port speed to use with the following rules:

  • 14400 change the port speed to 19200
  • 28800 change the port speed to 38400
  • 33600 change the port speed to 57600

If you have to dial an extension to reach an outside line or dial a string to disable call waiting, enter it in the Phone num field before the phone number. Place a comma after the dial out string so that the modem will pause for one second before dialing (i.e. 9, 448 1222 or *70, 448 1222).

Click the Authentication... button. Replace putLoginHere with the username that you chose and add your password to the password field (duh!).

Click OK, then Done and restart your Mac.

Section 3: Connecting to the Internet

Launch ConfigPPP from the Control Panels and click Open. ConfigPPP will dial the L A Bridge phone number, authenticate your password, and connect you directly to the internet. You can now launch Netscape, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Eudora or any other internet clients. When you are finished with your on-line session click Hard Close in the ConfigPPP window to disconnect.

Section 4: Configuring your Email

Once you are connected to L A Bridge launch Netscape Navigator. Under the Options menu select Mail and News Preferences. Select Servers. In the Outgoing mail enter smtp.LABridge.com. Under Incoming Mail type pop.LABridge.com. The POP user ID should be your login name (i.e. mary, not mary@LABridge.com)

Next, select the Identity menu option and configure it with the appropriate information. It is not necessary to fill in the Organization box.

Section 5: Troubleshooting and Getting Help

Please check our common connection problems. If you are still having difficulty but you can connect to the Internet please send email to suppor@LABridge.com. Otherwise call 310.228.3626 and one of our support staff will get back to you.
